By these words the poet Ján Kollár paid honours to bicycles, when as a student used to ride it in order to see his adored Mína. Advantages of bicycle - mashine enabling ride by your own power - appreciate already more than a century millions of people in different parts of the world. As though not, combination of freedom of movement, experience from riding, increase in your physical abilities, and all that without any impact on environment, it doesn't provide any other means of transport.
Nowadays majority of the citizens of our country use bicycle only for recreation or sport. Not surprisingly, conditions in surroundings of many Slovak towns /Bratislava is not an exception/ are very good. Bicycle has always been the means of transport. Cycling is fast
Bicycle is the fastest means of transport for short distances - from door to door.Thanks to little space demand the traffic jams are not a problem. In comparison to public transport further time saving can be achieved by not having to wait and walk to the bus stop. Cyclist also doesn't waste time by looking for a parking space, unlike a car's driver.
Cycling is healthy
Still more people, who want to feel fit, are active, do some sport. If during weekdays people don't have any time left for sport, it makes sense to use bicycle as means of transport for everyday purposes (work, shopping, education). Half an hour of cycling daily reduces the risk of various illnesses.
Cycling is sustainable and environmentally-friendly
Cycling does not produce any harmful exhaust gas, it does not make almost any noise, it does not throw up dust, it has little space demands. That's why bicycle is an ideal means of transport in the city. It doesn't worsen citizens' quality of life, it doesn't do harm to environment. It contributes to emission reduction of CO2 and other greenhouse gases in atmosphere.
Cycling saves money
Cycling is particularly economical. Annual costs on bicycle (purchase, maintenance, repairs) are 180 EUR/year. For comparison, for a car it is 5.230 EUR/year, for public transport 385 EUR/year (source: VCÖ, ÖAMTC, Wiener LInien).
